Amar Jibon: My Life
The first memoir written by a Bengali woman who taught herself to read and write in secret.
My Great, Great Great, Great grandmother grew up at a time when women’s education was not very common. But adamant on learning how to read her favorite religious text by herself, she would steal her son school books and teach herself how to read and write and secret. All this while running a full house from morning till evening. She went on to write a memoirs and became the first woman in Bengal to do so. Amat Jibon or My Life, is still taught at universities.
I’m going to be putting her memoirs up in a serialized manner starting this week. I was surprised there was so much interest from the community when I shared my plans earlier last week. So as promised here is the first installation. Take it as a teaser if you may.
I’m going to put some of it outside the paywall, but since it’s a copyrighted book, I would rather prefer to put it behind a Bay wall eventually. If you’re really interested in going through this incredible journey to consider subscribing for a month or two at least.
I felt like I am watching Satyajit Ray's black and white movie. Waiting for the next chapter.
Sorry just a teaser trailer today! But I thought it would be good to give an introduction before so I have a sense of how many people are interested etc.
